Probably Stolen Mods Install: Steam Workshop Step by Step

Most Probably Stolen mods install through the Steam Workshop in a few clicks. The problems start when a mod needs a loader, a dependency, or a manual folder, or when a patch changes the game under an old mod. This guide covers the normal path and the failure cases.

For the mod catalogue, see the mods guide. For crashes, see mod compatibility.

Before you install anything

  1. Back up your save. Find the save folder before you add mods, not after something breaks.
  2. Finish the tutorial. A mod that changes the UI can make the tutorial harder to follow.
  3. Close the game. Steam can queue a subscription while the game is running, but the mod will not load until restart.
  4. Check the mod's last update. A mod last updated before a major patch is a risk.

The save location depends on your platform and install. On Windows, check the game's AppData folder and the Steam userdata directory. Copy the whole save folder to a backup location.

The normal path: Steam Workshop

  1. Open the Probably Stolen Workshop ↗.
  2. Open the mod page.
  3. Click Subscribe.
  4. Wait for Steam to download the item.
  5. Launch the game.
  6. Open the game's mod menu, if it has one, and enable the mod.
  7. Restart the game if the mod asks for it.

Some mods load automatically; others require an in-game enable step. Read the mod description before assuming it is active.

Load order

Load order matters when two mods change the same system. A UI mod that rewrites the inventory panel and a sorting mod that also rewrites it can conflict. The one loaded later may overwrite the other.

A practical order:

  1. Core libraries or loaders.
  2. Framework mods and dependencies.
  3. Gameplay mods.
  4. UI mods.
  5. Translation mods.
  6. Cosmetic mods.

This is a general convention, not a guarantee. Follow the author's instructions if they specify an order.

Two inventory mods are not better than one

Smart Inventory Arrange and another inventory overhaul may both work alone but conflict together. Pick one.

Manual installs

Some mods are not on the Workshop, or require a manual file. The general pattern is:

  1. Download the mod archive.
  2. Read the included README.
  3. Find the game's mod or plugins folder.
  4. Extract the mod into its own folder.
  5. Enable it in the game or loader.
  6. Launch and test.

Do not extract a mod directly into the game root unless the README says so. A mod with its own folder is easier to remove.

Mono mods

The Workshop has a mono tag for Mono-based mods. These usually require a specific loader or runtime. The exact loader depends on the mod; read the description.

If a Mono mod does not appear in the mod menu:

  • Check that the loader is installed.
  • Check that the mod version matches the game version.
  • Check the loader log for errors.
  • Disable other Mono mods and test one at a time.

Do not install a Mono mod by dropping files into a random folder. The loader expects a specific structure.

Updating mods

Steam updates subscribed mods automatically. That is convenient, but it can break a working setup:

  • A mod update may require a new dependency.
  • A game patch may break an old mod.
  • A translation may lag behind a UI mod.

Before a major patch, note your working mod list. After the patch, test with mods disabled, then re-enable one at a time.

Uninstalling mods

  1. Unsubscribe on the Workshop page.
  2. Restart Steam if the item does not disappear.
  3. Check the mod folder for leftover files.
  4. Load a save made before the mod, if the mod added content.
  5. Verify the game files if something still looks wrong.

Removing a mod that added items can corrupt a save that contains those items. Back up before uninstalling a gameplay mod.

Backup and restore

A simple backup routine:

What When Where
Save folder Before adding mods Outside the game directory
Mod list Before a patch A text file or screenshot
Loader config After a stable setup Same backup folder
Game screenshots Before a UI change Optional

If the game updates and breaks, restore the save, disable mods, and test vanilla first. That tells you whether the patch or the mod is the problem.

Common install mistakes

  • Subscribing and launching without enabling the mod.
  • Installing two mods that change the same UI panel.
  • Using an old Mono loader with a new game patch.
  • Extracting a mod into the wrong folder.
  • Forgetting to back up the save.
  • Assuming a Workshop mod works in a cracked or offline install.

FAQ

Do I need a mod manager? Not for most Workshop mods. A manager helps with manual installs and load order.

Where do Workshop mods install? Steam manages the download. The exact folder is inside the Steam Workshop content directory for the game.

Can I install mods on Mac? The game supports Mac, but mod compatibility varies. Check the mod page for platform notes before subscribing.

Do mods disable achievements? Not documented. Use UI-only mods for achievement runs if you want to be safe.
